God As A Fortress

Psalm 18:1-2 - “I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

The notes at the beginning of many of the songs, are historical markers of what was going on in the life of the writer (in most cases King David) as he penned the words of the Psalm. The verses we just read were written “on the day the Lord rescued him from the hands of his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.” It is recorded as it happens in II Samuel 22:3.

This brings us to the word “fortress” in our passage. It is the word “metsada” in the Hebrew language and means a place of refuge and safety from the enemy. If the word sounds familiar, it is the same as the name for the rock fortress made by King Herod called Masada. And this gets us to the point of the day.

Herod built a man made fortress of rock, thinking that this would be a safe place that no enemy could penetrate. David on the other hand, while he hid in mountain places like En Gedi (I Samuel 23:29), knew he could only trust God to be his real fortress.

Every Christ follower goes through battles with enemies like both Herod and David did. Every disciple meets the end of their strength. So where will you run? A man made solution, or the fortress that is the Lord?
