You Are A Disciple Of Jesus

Luke 6:40 - “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”

A simple verse today with a simple lesson. We are disciples of Jesus Christ. The word most frequently used in the New Testament to describe those who have made Jesus Lord and Savior by faith in him, is disciple. It is used to describe Christ followers over 239 times (compare to three times “Christian”).

The greek word we translate into disciple is “mathetes” which literally means pupil, student, or learner. And this is what Jesus is calling us into today. We don’t come to Jesus as perfect, or earning our way; but rather as those committed to learning his way by following. This means that when we come to Jesus we are in a position of constant learning.

Jesus called his disciples in the first century and is calling us now into a relationship of teacher (rabbi) and learner (disciple). And this verse says that a fully trained disciple becomes like this teacher. And that is what the Holy Spirit of God is creating in us. We are becoming like Jesus by following Jesus. So learn today, and then learn tomorrow - this is how we become like our rabbi.
