Psalm of Ascents

Psalm 122:1-9 - “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’ Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem!”

Psalm 122 is one of fifteen Psalms classified as a “Psalm of ascents.” Most scholars understand this as traveling songs sung by pilgrims headed to the Jerusalem for one of three annual feasts Jews were required to attend (Passover, Weeks, Tabernacles). Going to Jerusalem was always an ascent because of the geography (2,500 feet above sea level), but also because of approaching the place of God’s house, the temple.

With such context, hear the words of excitement for going to worship. Like today’s church, this was one of three times each year (imagine if you could only afford to go to church three times a year!) where a child of God could express their love for God, fellowship with others who love God, and be in the actual presence of God.

As Covid wanes, may we capture the same excitement of gathering with the saints as the word of this Psalm. Even this Sunday, may we say, “I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord.”
