Finding The Heart Behind Our Choices

Proverbs 21:2 - “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.”

This proverb is a word of wisdom, inspired by the Holy Spirit to guide us as we live for God. As such, each one is meant to be pondered. To really get the deep teaching of one of the proverb requires slow reading, repeating it over and over until it’s meaning becomes clear. Proverbs are meant to have few words, with expansive importance.

The first part of this proverb expresses the truth for all of us. It is easy for us to justify our actions, plans, activities, and decisions. We are usually right in our own eyes. But wisdom tells us there is something more important than the ways we tend to justify.

This is the Lord’s part. He sees past our actions, plans, and activities right into our heart. In other words, our motives from within result in our actions without…and God knows our motives. He weighs the heart even when we have convinced those around us and ourselves that we are justified in our actions.

On this day, let’s get past our excuses and justifications for every decision and first ask, “what is my motive?” Finding the heart behind the paths we choose will give us God’s perspective and help us follow his right way.
