Two Lessons From An Unusual Battle

Exodus 17:12-13 - “But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.”

Today’s verse recaps an unusual battle fought by the Israelite right after they had been freed from slavery in Egypt. It is unusual because of how they fought and won against their enemies from the southern part of the Promised Land.

Unlike the deliverance from the Egyptian army when Moses told them they only had to stand still and God would fight for them, this time they had to choose men to actually fight in battle with the sword.

Two lessons for this day

1)Though the battle is won by God (the staff of Moses was still God’s vehicle for his power) he sometimes uses us to participate in fighting and winning the battles we face. Just like in Jesus, we have been freed from the slavery of sin, but we are called to fight against Satan’s schemes. Instead of a staff, we have the Holy Spirit in us to bring us power and victory.

2) We help each other wins these battles. No one fights alone. Moses needed Joshua to have an army. Joshua needed Moses to raise his staff for victory. And Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold his arms up so the staff could be raised.

While we’re not sure why or how the staff worked in this instance; we do know it was the visible sign of God’s presence. Like our ancient brothers and sisters, the battle belongs to the Lord. But we are called to fight and sometimes we are called to help those in the fight by holding up their arms. Who needs you to support them today like Aaron and Hur did Moses?
