White As Snow

Isaiah 1:18 - “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

Given the predicted “snowmaggedon” of Central Illinois it’s appropriate to look at a verse about snow from the Bible. Many don’t realize it, but Mt. Hermon in the farthest northern part of Israel (and partly in Lebanon and Syria) is 9,000 feet above sea level and is snow-covered year round. Also, though rare, snow does occur in Jerusalem and other parts of the biblical lands.

So it’s not surprising that we find snow mentioned often in the Bible as a visual people could relate to. David asked to be washed white as snow. The angel at Jesus empty tomb had clothes white as snow. In heavenly visions of Jesus in both Daniel and Revelation, his hair is described as white as snow. The Proverbs 31 woman has clothed her family so they don’t worry about snow.

In today’s verse the encouragement is simple. The stains of our sins (scarlet here) are covered to become white as snow. This is Isaiah’s prophecy about a Savior who would take away our sin by his death, burial, and resurrection. So take a look at the snow. It’s a picture of how clean you are before God because of the grace of Jesus.
