Romans 8:1&2 - “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
It is not rare for Christ followers to occasionally question whether or not they have fallen outside of the grace of Jesus. It could be a season of living in sin, walking away from the church, or struggling with the same sin over and over. This causes Christians to sometimes wonder whether or not they are still within God’s will.
Today’s verse is the apostle Paul’s reassurance that for those who are in Christ, there is no condemnation. Here’s why. Because those who are in Christ have the Holy Spirit and our righteousness no longer depends on keeping the law perfectly. In fact, all of chapter 8 of Romans talks about the role of the Holy Spirit in keeping us walking with Jesus.
We are no longer under the law - which everyone has broken on some level. When we break the law, that is called sin and sin always leads to death. According to verse two we have been set free from this law-sin-death cycle. We don’t live like this any more.
Instead, we live free because of Jesus and the Spirit gives new life in us. This is the Jesus-Spirt-life reality those who follow Jesus are in. And here, there is no condemnation. So if you are feeling guilt about a sin or season of sin in your life, lean into the Holy Spirit today and let him guide you, lead you, and convict you back to walking with Jesus. But whatever you do, don’t give up. You are not condemned. You are alive.
