Romans 16:25-27 - “Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages, but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.
This closing to Paul’s letter to the Romans concludes with what most Bibles label a “doxology” - literally a “glory word.” And this glory word focuses on the mystery of God revealed in Jesus Christ so that all the nations could be redeemed and come to obedience by faith.
This is the thought for today. God is mysterious. For centuries men and women of faith prophesied, prayed, and anticipated God’s great salvation work among them. But it remained a mystery and secret that only God knew. The word mystery means to hide or conceal and the word secret in the original language means to be silent. In other words, God hid from mankind when he would send Jesus and kept silent about it to mankind.
But this “only wise God” did a great work in his mysterious timing and way. Today, I can proceed by faith not because I understand God’s ways. He is mysterious as ever as to why certain things happen or don’t. He is silent sometimes as we try to figure out what he’s up to. But here’s what history tells us. His timing and his work will always be perfect. And because of that, we can face the mystery of this day by trusting in the one who knows the secret of his return, and his redemption in our lives.
