The Best Way To Respond

Proverbs 15:1 - “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Did you know you can determine how every conversation goes? From a response to a tweet or post to your reaction to someone’s criticism, your words can either calm things down or stir things up. The “how” is found in this simple proverb.

Remember the book of proverbs is one of the wisdom books of the Bible. These short sayings are what I call “fortune cookies of the soul” and were written by men (mostly Solomon) who were led by the Spirit to give wisdom for life. This one deals with how we wisely use our words as we follow God.

When we speak (verbally or in writing) we have the ability to answer softly. Often the news, a tweet, an activist, or an opponent will say something incredibly harsh to bait us into a similar response. We may want to scream our response. But if we answer harshly - the anger is intensified and the battle is on. However, if we answer calmly, not defensively, critically, or angrily, we can literally diffuse the conversation. Try it. Speak softly today and see what happens.
