“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though it’s waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling… Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:1-3,10
Doesn't it take being still to know God? The desire that initially tempted Adam and Eve to sin in the garden was that they desired to be like God, and we still are drawn to that in ways today. It seems more subtle to us, but things like an over-desire to fix a situation, to rescue someone in need, or to make justice happen put me in a position of "playing God."
Being still helps me identify the ways I attempt to replace God with myself or something else. It is an experience that feels restless when you first try it because the busyness of life distracts us from the source of our life. But in the quiet stillness, we have the opportunity to remember - God is almighty, all-powerful, and good. Stillness reorients me to worship and trust Him above all other things...including me.
How do you get to a place of stillness before the Lord?
